Seventeen painters from Latin America
will show more than 40 artworks, offering a pan-cultural
view of contemporary painting in a show at the Queens
Library Gallery, "Francachela: Art of Latin America."
Artists from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador,
Mexico and Puerto Rico - some well-known, and some emerging
- present a variety of images, styles and techniques,
from figurative images to abstracts; from local to universal
themes. This is the group's first U.S. showing. Francachela
will be on display from March 15 - May 29, 2004. Admission
to the Queens Library Gallery is free.
The diversity of artistic expression
selected for this exhibition is according to Francachela's
democratic ideals: respect of freedom and pluralism
of human thought. Francachela, (in Spanish, meaning
a friendly and informal reunion) is an organization
that works towards the cultural integration of Latin
America, and represents an open invitation to bring
near all the countries through the universal language:
artistic creation. It was founded in 1996 by the Chilean
poet Carlos Aránguiz Zúñiga. Its
activities include: the publishing of a magazine (with
editorial teams in 11 countries); conferences; publishing
of books in Spanish and Portuguese; international fine
art and photography exhibits; literary encounters; musical
shows; staging of theater pieces; radio shows; exchange
cultural visits; founding of libraries, etc.
The Queens Library Gallery is located
inside the Queens Borough Public Library's Central Library,
89-11 Merrick Boulevard, Jamaica, NY. The Gallery is
open 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays, 10:00 a.m.

from Ballet Argentino. Julian Vat is the production's musical

Julio Bocca has left an indelible impression in the world
of dance with his exquisite artistry. Born in Buenos Aires,
Argentina, Bocca began his dance training with his mother
at the age of four and continued his studies at the Instituto
Superior de Arte del Teatro Colon where his teachers included
Gloria Kazda, Jose Pares, Ninel Jultyeva, Karemina Moreno
and Luis Aguilar. During that time, he danced with the Caracas
Ballet Company performing the title role in Le Spectre de
la Rose, among others. In 1983, Bocca joined the Ballet del
Teatro Municipal de Rio de Janeiro as a principal dancer and,
in the same year, appeared with the ballet company at the
Colon Theatre and with the International Ballet of Caracas.
In May 1985, Bocca won the Gold Medal at the Fifth International
Ballet Competition in Moscow. He has toured the former U.S.S.R.,
appearing with the ballet company in Novosibirsk, where he
danced the Prince in The Nutcracker and Basil in Don Quixote,
and with the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow and the Leningrad-Kirov
Ballet, again dancing in Don Quixote.
Bocca joined ABT as a Principal Dancer in 1986. His roles
with the Company include the title role in Apollo, Solor in
La Bayadère, a Stepsister in Cinderella, the Duet from
Concerto Six Twenty-Two, Conrad in Le Corsaire, Basilio in
Don Quixote, Albrecht and Hilarion in Giselle, Des Grieux
in Manon, Danilo in The Merry Widow, the pas de deux Other
Dances, Arthur Saint Léon in Pas des Déesses,
Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Prince Désiré in
The Sleeping Beauty, Misgir in The Snow Maiden, Prince Siegfried
in Swan Lake, James in La Sylphide, Petruchio in The Taming
of the Shrew, the Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, the fourth variation
in Variations for Four and leading roles in Drink To Me Only
With Thine Eyes, Études and Theme and Variations. Bocca
created the leading role in Brief Fling. In 2000, he made
his Broadway debut in Fosse.
In 1990, Julio Bocca created his own company, Ballet Argentino,
to present, in his own country and abroad, the artistic and
technical quality of young Argentine dancers. Originally under
the direction of Lidia Segni, the company, now under the artistic
direction of Bocca, gave its first performance in the city
of Mar del Plata in the summer of 1990. In addition to touring
annually throughout the Republic of Argentina, the company
has also performed in Australia, China, Colombia, Brazil,
Egypt, France, Italy, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Singapore,
Spain, Thailand and Venezuela. The company launched its fourth
tour of the United States this past spring with the premiere
of "The Man in the Red Tie" commissioned by The
Cerritos Center, University of Texas - Austin, National Dance
Project and the Houston Society for the Performing Arts.
